THE WILLOW PLAY CAFE

Designed as “a quintessential café with a twist”, the Willow Play Cafe reimagines a former Junction dive bar as a neighbourhood gathering place designed for families. Conceived as a café first, the project challenges the conventional separation between adult and child spaces by embedding play directly into the architecture.

Wood panelling and checkerboard flooring establish a familiar café setting that feels grounded and intentional rather than themed. A sculptural keyhole portal marks the transition from seating area to play, signalling a shift in scale and experience without fully separating the two worlds. Beyond it, climbing surfaces, slides, and tactile installations are built into the millwork and walls, allowing play to emerge from the architecture itself.

Seating is integrated directly into the play zone so parents remain close, reinforcing proximity as part of the design strategy rather than an afterthought. Grounded in STEM-based learning and informed by Reggio Emilia principles, the space supports open-ended exploration and hands-on discovery. The willow is expressed through structure and movement, shaping the room in subtle ways and reinforcing the idea of growth unfolding over time.
